Working with Home Depot was a fun project that made long lasting memories for me and my husband. We decided to paint our kitchen cabinets white and it’s all under $300! I’ll share the steps we took, the products we used (all from Home Depot), and the mishaps we had.
We first looked at the ways others had painted their kitchen cabinets to get an idea of what we would need. We then headed to our main depot to load the supplies.
We already had the spray paint and the plastic tarp. After we removed all the cabinet doors and cabinet faces, we emptied all the cabinets, removed those dreaded sticker liners from all the drawers and shelves, and started packing to begin. We built a painting booth in our garage and, to be honest, I’m pretty impressed. We recommend doing this to avoid getting paint everywhere.

Before we did anything, we had to go into the entire kitchen and clean with soap and water. We wanted to clean off any food, grease or dust stuck to the surface.
We also achieved a better foundation design and used liquid sander instead of sand and sanded everything down.
After all that, we were finally able to start priming. We used a “no need to sand” primer and at 2 hours the setting took us all afternoon.
Finally we were able to apply the first coat of paint. The paint has a drying time of 4-8 hours. Since we had to investigate all the doors and cupboard doors, it took two days to do both layers. However, we made one big mistake that took us another day! It was difficult to keep the primer and paint separate because we poured both into separate paint sprayer jugs. Unfortunately we messed up and instead of doing a second coat of paint… we did another coat of primer over the first coat of paint!

It took us about 5 days to complete the entire project. We are still adding things and changing things here and there.
