You see, we’re just piling up the cabinets in our garage while basically gutting the RV kitchen and bathroom, and for some stupid reason we didn’t cover them properly. After a few months of moving them in the garage they were destroyed and we had to paint them

Kitchen Cabinet Color Ideas & Trends

. And that’s not including the fact that I originally painted the kitchen base cabinets gray and then decided I really wanted them black. Or that I tried several different finishes on the black base cabinets and they turned out to be too streaky, too shiny, or got bird poop on them when I left them outside to dry and had to be painted.

Long story short, I felt like spoiled paint and never wanted to see another can of paint. MORE.

The truth is, I’ve been putting this post off for so long because just thinking about the process we’ve been through is exhausting.

That means I’m finally going to dress up my big dolls and share our painted RV kitchen cabinets with you. This way we can finally move on to bigger and better things like wooden countertops or plywood boards or any of the other projects we’ve been working on that I haven’t shared here yet. Oops.

If you are considering painting your RV kitchen, I hope this post inspires you in some way. Especially if you’re a little hesitant to wear black or considering a two-tone look. I hope we can prevent you from making the same mistakes I did. You can also see more pictures of our Reno RV kitchen here.

If you need a refresher, here’s a picture of our RV kitchen when we bought it. This is a 2008 Tiffin Allegro Open Road 32LA.

When we decided to go ahead with painting the kitchen, our RV was stored about 45 minutes away from our house. This obviously made painting the cabinets a bit more difficult.

The warehouse owners told us we could work in the RV while we were there, which is pretty awesome. The only problem is that we wouldn’t have electricity and wouldn’t be able to use the generator. This was last October and the camper got quite cold during the day.

Since we were so far from home with no water or electricity and not much room to work with, we finally decided it was better to remove all the doors and drawers beforehand and bring them home. So you can paint them with our paint sprayer.

We figured we could then go on a short weekend trip with the RV, where we could hike during the day and fill the closets at night with the “luxury” of electricity.

Before we left for the weekend, we decided to remove the cabinet doors and drawers and leave them at home.

It may sound silly, but it took me a little too long to figure out how to remove the drawers from the kitchen. If anyone else has this problem, all you have to do is push down (or sometimes up) on the little black handles on either side while pulling the box out.

How Much Does It Cost To Paint Kitchen Cabinets? (2024)

I didn’t realize how many cabinet and drawer doors were in the front of our RV until we removed them all.

We enjoyed our short trip to Helen, GA and saw some beautiful waterfalls. It was a rainy weekend, but it was still beautiful, and we didn’t mind staying inside a little longer to enjoy our new device and taste life on the road.

At night we enjoyed drinks and a movie in the background while we painted all the cabinets, which are mostly chipboard and wood veneer. All cabinets have previously been lightly sanded and wiped with a cleaner (I recommend using Simple Green).

If you’re going to use chalk paint or mineral paint, you can usually skip this step, but I originally decided to use latex paints…at least the first time.

Here is our small kitchen during the first primer. The coloring wasn’t the best, but it was moving in the right direction. We used a primer we picked up from our garage before the trip, but I recommend buying an adhesive/tack primer, especially if you’re painting a non-wood surface.

We went on our little excursion, but instead we had to paint the first floor with a brush because the nearest hardware store was already closed for the night. The next day we picked up some more rolls that had a much better coverage.

If you plan to paint the wooden cabinets white, I recommend 2 coats of primer with a quality roller and then two coats of white paint. The exception is if you are using an adhesive/adhesion primer as it is much thicker and in most cases only requires one coat.

Side note: We later decided to remove the microwave, which helped us paint a little deeper into the side cabinets. It also made it easier to install our wooden back panel, which we’ll talk about later.

Popular Kitchen Cabinet Colors With Long Lasting Appeal

After Helena came home from the weekend, we removed all the supplies from the cabinets to get them ready for painting. You may notice that I have labeled everything. To be honest, I don’t know if it really helped much, but it seemed like a good idea at the time.

The new knobs and drawers didn’t fit in the existing holes, so we filled them with wood filler. Then we sanded all the doors and drawers to get them ready for painting. We would also clean them so that they were free of dust.

These popular cabinet doors were real solid wood, so I decided (hoped) that a light sanding would help and decided to skip the primer.

If you are painting something other than wood, definitely use an adhesive primer! If in doubt, use a primer first.

To make things easier, I taped parchment paper around the boxes to prevent overspray. Then I put them in this super awesome paint splash guard that Homeright sent us to try out. (Here’s a smaller version)

I knew from the beginning that I wanted two-tone cabinets, but I was unsure whether to paint the bases black or gray. To be honest, I really wanted black, but everyone said I was crazy to put black cabinets in such a small space. In most cases I would have done this anyway, but for some reason I was more nervous this time since this was our first real renovation project.

After two coats, our base cabinets looked so buttery soft and beautiful. That’s why I love paint sprayers so much, they prevent brush strokes and make the paint so smooth.

Side note: I did a test on another cabinet first to see if I needed to apply these first, but in the end I decided it wasn’t necessary because this paint color covered well.

Affordable Update Ideas: Oak Or Wood Kitchen Cabinets (part 2)

I used 2 coats of primer on the upper kitchen cabinets and then 2 coats of white paint.

After everything was dry, I sealed all the cabinets with Wipe-on-Poly, which worked well. Overall, we were very pleased with the end result of the cabinets. They were beautiful and everything seemed to go smoothly during the painting process which seemed to be a success.

It felt more contemporary than rustic, if that makes sense, and the underlying hardware felt really heavy. It just wasn’t right, huh huh.

I told Eric I was going to repaint the base cabinets and while he was cool with it, he thought it was a little crazy because they looked good in gray.

, and they could probably go together once the rest of our reno is done, but I knew they would look the same

However, I decided to take my time and thought I might revisit the idea after a few other kitchen projects.

Except that didn’t happen, because less than two weeks later we discovered a large water leak from the roof due to cracks in the skylight. The upper cabinets had to come out so the ceiling panel could be replaced and that’s when I decided to paint the lower cabinets black because of my stomachache.

I thought of using chalk paint this time, because at least this way I wouldn’t have to sand the cabinets again and I could paint directly over the previous paint.

How To Paint Rv Cabinets The Right Way

I’ve used Annie Sloan chalk paint before, but I thought it would be fun to try a different brand.
