People who shop for vacuum cleaners find what seems like an endless number: upright vacuums, cordless, robot vacuums, canister models. Each has its own set of preferences.
With upright vacuums, the best models are powerful vacuums that work well on both carpets and bare floors. They should also be easy to transport, a breeze to store, and come with several attachments that make cleaning easy.
Over the years, we have tested hundreds of vacuum cleaners. We focused our expertise on finding the best upright vacuum on the market, and the Shark Apex AZ1002 (available at Amazon for $329.99) came out as our top pick after testing. This is a vacuum cleaner with powerful dust.
As the name suggests, Apex AZ1002 Shark is the best model of the company. Its DuoClean feature allows it to clean both carpeted and hard floors. The Apex scored nearly flawlessly in our emissions tests. On linoleum, regular carpet, and hard carpet, this vacuum picked up rice, pasta, and pet hair better than vacuums costing hundreds more.

The Apex comes with a scraping tool, a print tool and a motorized brush head. Normally, we thought that the distribution for the Eastern vacuum was small. However, the versatility of its motorized rollers makes up for it. It’s thin enough to slip between pillows, but powerful enough to get the job done.
Finally, the Apex came out on top in our carpet cleaning tests, landing in the top third of the vacuums we’ve tested so far. On average, the Apex picked up 54% of the dirt we threw at it, the best performance of any shark egg on the market.

The Oreck XL2100RHS is a basic but tough floor cleaner. Its highly centralized design does not require attachments or hoses to clean boards or curtains. At just over 10 pounds, it’s easy to carry and climb. Its 5-inch profile is low enough to fit under most beds and some couches.
During cleaning tests, the Oreck picked up 30.25% of the test dirt in one pass. Normally, that’s lower than we’d like to see, but the XL2100RHS is so light that we think it’s powerful for its size.
The Dyson Ball Multifloor 2 upright vacuum marks the intersection between the company’s cordless and full-body efforts. It weighs about 10% less than the Dyson Ball Animal 2, but is about 10% more powerful.
