What is the best cleanser? There is no simple answer to this question. It depends on several factors, including floor types, living conditions and, of course, budget.

The Best Upright Vacuum In 2024, Tested By Editors

People who shop for vacuum cleaners find what seems like an endless number: upright vacuums, cordless, robot vacuums, canister models. Each has its own set of preferences.

With upright vacuums, the best models are powerful vacuums that work well on both carpets and bare floors. They should also be easy to transport, a breeze to store, and come with several attachments that make cleaning easy.

Over the years, we have tested hundreds of vacuum cleaners. We focused our expertise on finding the best upright vacuum on the market, and the Shark Apex AZ1002 (available at Amazon for $329.99) came out as our top pick after testing. This is a vacuum cleaner with powerful dust.

As the name suggests, Apex AZ1002 Shark is the best model of the company. Its DuoClean feature allows it to clean both carpeted and hard floors. The Apex scored nearly flawlessly in our emissions tests. On linoleum, regular carpet, and hard carpet, this vacuum picked up rice, pasta, and pet hair better than vacuums costing hundreds more.

Best Affordable Upright Bagless Vacuums Of 2024

The Apex comes with a scraping tool, a print tool and a motorized brush head. Normally, we thought that the distribution for the Eastern vacuum was small. However, the versatility of its motorized rollers makes up for it. It’s thin enough to slip between pillows, but powerful enough to get the job done.

Finally, the Apex came out on top in our carpet cleaning tests, landing in the top third of the vacuums we’ve tested so far. On average, the Apex picked up 54% of the dirt we threw at it, the best performance of any shark egg on the market.

In the vacuum world, Sebo is known for its filtration. Their model X7 has three layers of filters. The first is a class S pre-filter, which is equivalent to HEPA. (You can also buy HEPA filters for the X7.)

After the air passes through the motor, it enters a three-layer bag that collects particles. Finally, an electrostatic filter in the robot, similar to what you find in many air purifiers, helps eliminate odors. The complete kit is a filtration system similar to what you would find in a hospital.

Between its suction power and filtration, Sebo X7 can help you fight pet hair, dander or odors in your home. This power makes up for the lack of cornering control. A powerful factory and weak steering make the X7 a tank.

In the carpet test, it picked up 39% of the test dirt in one pass. Anything over 33% is a win for us as it is common practice to go over the carpet at least three times before moving on to the next piece.

Shark vacuum cleaners are popular on the internet, and the Shark Navigator NV352 has thousands of positive reviews in our lab. The Navigator is lighter than other Shark models, including the Apex. This allows for moving around furniture and climbing stairs.

During testing, the Navigator picked up about 38% of the dirt we threw at it, so be prepared to go over it at least three times before cleaning it up. This product is very weak compared to other vacuums in this price range. However, the Navigator makes up for it in its features and warranty.

Kenmore Elite 31150 Pet Friendly Bagged Upright Vacuum

This upright bag vacuum comes with four cleaning attachments, including a 2-foot splitter for hard-to-reach areas. It also has a five-year warranty, one of the best in the industry. Read our full review of the Shark Navigator NV352.

The Oreck XL2100RHS is a basic but tough floor cleaner. Its highly centralized design does not require attachments or hoses to clean boards or curtains. At just over 10 pounds, it’s easy to carry and climb. Its 5-inch profile is low enough to fit under most beds and some couches.

During cleaning tests, the Oreck picked up 30.25% of the test dirt in one pass. Normally, that’s lower than we’d like to see, but the XL2100RHS is so light that we think it’s powerful for its size.

The Dyson Ball Multifloor 2 upright vacuum marks the intersection between the company’s cordless and full-body efforts. It weighs about 10% less than the Dyson Ball Animal 2, but is about 10% more powerful.

Professional Upright With Tools Sl4110a

The Multifloor 2 picked up about 64% of the dirt in the test we put it to, which is well above average, but it fell behind more powerful Dyson models like the Dyson Animal 2. However, this is a great value. You get Dyson’s engineering and attention to detail at a very affordable price.

As one of the oldest and most respected brands there are places where people just say “hoover” instead of “vacuum”. The Hoover WindTunnel 2 Whole House Rewind perfectly demonstrates why.

Weighing in at 18 pounds, this is one of the heaviest vacuums we’ve ever tested. Instead of all the pressure, you get a powerful vacuum. In testing, the Rewind picked up 50% of our dirt mix in one pass.

We also found its name return function useful. At the touch of the foot lever, the cord automatically retracts into the device, making maintenance very easy.

Shark NV752 TruePet is a crowd pleaser. It picked up about 52% of the dirt we threw at it during testing, placing it in the top third of the vacuums we tested. Vacuums collect about 70% at the top level.

Given its name, you might guess that this Shark vacuum does a good job on pet hair, and you’d be right. When tested especially on pet hair, the NV752’s main brush head and motor attachment both performed very well. Its ability to handle pet issues has made the NV752 the preferred vacuum for pet hair.

This vacuum cleaner does not only work with pet hair. The NV752’s Lift-Away feature converts directly into a wheelless vacuum, allowing you to clean stairs and under furniture with ease.

The Bissell 22543 CleanView Swivel Rewind Pet is for pet lovers. This is a great entry level that only lasts so long. Its string can control almost any room and then automatically turn back. Also, Bissell donates a portion of the proceeds from every purchase of this unit to animal shelters.

Kenmore 400 Series Bagged Canister Vacuum Cleaner Pet Friendly Vac 2.2l Capacity

When we tested its cleaning capabilities, the Rewind Pet picked up 41.25% of the dirt in one pass. It also impressed us with its edge-to-edge cleaning that provides suction on its brush head.

I’m John Chan, Senior Lab. My job is to test and write about products from refrigerators to detergents, but my real experience is testing all kinds of vacuums, from robot vacuums to helicopters and everything in between. Together with my colleague Kyle Hamilton, we tested all the vacuums in this guide.

When we test cleaners, we consider each unit’s ability to clean four types of messes: piles of pet hair, grains of rice, uncooked pasta, and our “home” soil, which is made of filtered sand and baby powder.

We evaluate the performance of each vacuum cleaner on different floor types: on carpeted areas (high carpet and low carpet) and on linoleum floors. We also rate the vacuum on its ability to remove dust mites and dirt from under furniture.

The Best Vacuum Cleaners In 2024 For A Tidy Home

There’s a lot more to a vacuum than picking up dirt, so we also consider noise levels, attachments, cord length, weight, dirt capacity, warranty, portability, battery life (for cordless models), and overall user experience.

For example, someone who has a cat or dog at home can buy a cleaner that specializes in pet hair, while someone who spends a lot of time in their car can spend money on a handheld vacuum cleaner.

It is important that your vacuum cleaner is compatible with your floor types. Vacuum cleaners are usually just for cleaning carpets and can do a good job on bare floors. If you have hard floors throughout your home, you can use a cordless vacuum cleaner with a soft roller or
