Washer And Dryer For Homeless – “Most of us do not have the ability or right to have a washer and dryer at home. We have to go to the cleaners,” said Oscarin Ortega, founder of Lived Experiences.
Ortega saw a need for laundry access in the areas where he worked and came up with the idea for a laundry trailer.

“We created a laundry system,” he said. “Four washers, four dryers, and we bring it to society all day long, and we have people who don’t get the privilege of having free clothes.”

Ortega launched the Rockwood Toy Hauler in 1991 with the plan to install washers and dryers inside, but the project was easier said than done.
“The conversation started six months ago. What are we going to start from?” he said. “Again, no one has ever built one like this. At first we thought I could just buy a trailer, buy pads and hook them up. It’s not so simple”
Although a laundry trailer can be towed almost anywhere, water and electricity are needed to provide laundry services.

Jordan Verdin, owner of Humanity Showers, is happy to offer laundry services to the people he helps.
“We are really happy. “Everything we do is based on the conversations we have with the people who come here who may be experiencing homelessness,” Verdin said. “One of the guys said, ‘Hey, you know what would make this place better if we had clothes?'”
“It’s a win-win for the whole family and the people who come here, sometimes with limited means,” he said. “But this is the most important thing for the community. This is an additional tool that no one expected. Perfect. We all need a little help sometimes. “
“This is the most helpful thing I’ve been able to deal with in a long time. I’m very happy to be a part of it,” he said.

“We want to build more. The dream is to take it to society, leave it there for the whole day and people will benefit from it,” he said. “Take it to Mira Costa College, Palomar College and provide money to poor or insecure students. – wise or wise and make them benefit from it. That’s what it’s all about. “It’s not just about the homeless, it’s about low-income families and everyone in general.”
I love hearing from the community and what’s important to you. No story is too small. If this is important to you, more than anyone else.

Free Laundry Day at a Kansas City community center provides dignity and nourishment to those struggling to find a place to do their laundry.
It’s Wednesday. Gates Plaza Ultra Wash on Brooklyn Avenue is bustling with self-serve washers and dryers. And it is full of the spirit of happiness.
People carry garbage bags, duffel bags, shopping baskets, wheeled luggage and backpacks. Some people take out washing machines. Others are sorting through loads of blankets, socks, pants and shirts. Others sat down on a plate of fried rice.
A Fresh, Clean Start
Most of these people have no permanent place of residence. They take advantage of Restart’s free laundry day.
On Wednesday, David Murphy loads his new laundry into the dryer at Gates Plaza Ultra Wash. Murphy called the ability to do free laundry “a godsend.”
If you put on clean clothes, you will feel a little better. Like a new person,” said 42-year-old David Murphy.
“It washes away everything that’s wrong with you, man. It’s like a new day,” he said. “Even if it’s a bad day, it’s a new day.”
Free Laundry Spruces Up Dignity
Murphy lives in his car. It recently fell apart, but he managed to get it going again long enough to find a job. He says he has been homeless for two years. Just outside the glass windows, his pit bulls are tied to a chair outside – where they can keep an eye on him.
“He’s god to me,” he says. “I was carrying a trunk of dirty clothes and dog blankets.”
A customer at Gates Plaza Ultra Wash checks his laundry while other machines sit idle, and many ReStart customers finish their laundry day.
He says, “I used to wash it wherever I could, maybe a gas station restroom or something.”

ReStart COO Jonathan Lee Roberts says there is no pressure on anyone to do anything or meet any expectations.
“This is a rare opportunity to really connect with people experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness in a non-threatening way,” he said.
Roberts looks out at the rows of washers and dryers as other people begin to slip out of the laundromat toward the street or the waiting Restart minibus.
He says the organization will visit various homeless camps and pick up anyone who wants their clothes washed. Some will get a ride or a ride.

“When we communicate on the streets and go to the camps where people live, sometimes it can create, I think, a kind of intimidation and control,” he said.
ReStart welcomes anyone who needs laundry to attend Wednesday afternoon sessions with no strings attached, Roberts said. However, the organization extends its support to any services a person may need.
He says: “If they would like to talk to someone door to door or talk to someone about their current experience or go to a doctor, connecting with services and getting off the streets,” we are here to talk. too.”

Carol Vlahos quickly goes from helping unload a truck, to serving a plate of fried rice, to helping someone operate the controls of a large, heavy dryer.
“It’s my favorite time of the week,” she says. “These are homeless people. Once you walk in here, you’ll never know.”

Vlahos says Seattle’s constant rainfall is causing a number of illnesses among homeless people, such as pneumonia and bronchitis. He saw clothes lying all over the city, wet, moldy and moldy.
“There are no more clothes in the world because now they can wash them, they don’t have to throw them away and go out and buy them or buy more,” he said. “And pneumonia, bronchitis and everything else went down because they got into clean sleeping bags and blankets.”

This comes in handy because people often call him or stick their head over the washing machine, asking him to insert a card to replace the coins or dollars needed to run the washing machine.
ReStart uses grant money to provide free laundry on Wednesdays. Reapers provide most of the food that ReStart chefs use to prepare hot meals. Harvesters also provide sack lunches and other drinks that everyone can take with them after washing their clothes.
He says something as simple as having clean clothes has a big impact on how people respond to him as a homeless person.
“Sometimes it’s hard to find a shower,” he says. “Sometimes it’s difficult to find a place to wash clothes. And if you don’t have both of those things, you’re the smelly person on the bus and no one wants to sit next to you, and that’s not a good feeling.
