How the paint is applied to the specific type of cabinet material determines the results. Wood or pressed wood or any material that can be sanded is best for laminates because the paint adheres better to the wood. If repainting the piece, look for a paint that is specifically designed to bond to plastic surfaces.
When choosing the best cabinet paint, look for a color that is designed for high-use areas. Some paint manufacturers make strong bonding paints that bond well and dry hard. The paint should also resist scratching. You usually don’t need a color additive because it will blend into the color you choose.
To start, clear clutter from countertops, empty all cabinets, and cover any tiles and fixtures with painter’s tape. Next, remove all items from the cabinet doors. Label drawers and supplies so it’s easy to put them back in the right place after the paint dries.

One thing I always wanted in my forever home was a white kitchen. You know you have a passion for a project that brings tears to your eyes when creating a beautiful, dreamy kitchen!
Home Depot is one of my favorite stores that I visit regularly. Being creative makes me happy. And I’m proud to get it right. I love making my home my own. I love my print on every corner. As far as I can see, I won’t be slowing down anytime soon.
Working with Home Depot was a fun project that left lasting memories for my husband and me. We decided to whitewash our kitchen cabinets and did it all for under $300! I’ll share the steps we took, the products we used (all from Home Depot), and the mishaps that happened.
Simple Ideas To Update Your Kitchen Cabinets
We first looked at ways others had painted their kitchen cabinets to get an idea of what we needed. We then went to our local warehouse to store the goods.
We already had a paint sprayer and a plastic tarp. After removing all the cabinet doors and drawer faces, we emptied all the cabinets, removed the dreaded sticker from every drawer and shelf, and started installing the stuff so we could get started. We made room in our garage to paint and I’m honestly so impressed. We recommend doing this so you don’t get paint everywhere.
Before we could do anything, we had to go through the entire kitchen and clean them with soap and water. We wanted to remove any food, grease or dust that had stuck to the surface.
We went for an even better base and instead of sandblasting, we used liquid sandpaper and sanded everything down with it.

Finally we were able to start swimming. We used a “no sanding required” primer and it took us an afternoon to dry for 2 hours.
Finally, we were able to apply our first coat of paint. Paint dries in 4-8 hours. Because we had to turn each drawer face, it took two days to do both layers. However, we made a big mistake that pushed us to another day! It was difficult to keep the primer and paint separate because we put them both in separate paint sprayer pots. Unfortunately, we messed them up and instead of applying a second coat of paint… we applied another coat of primer on top of the first coat of paint!
It took us around 5 days to complete the entire project. We are still adding things here and there and changing things. Being able to shop at Home Depot to quickly and easily get all the supplies, organize and organize everything, and finally liquid sanding, priming, and finally painting steps with the help of Home Depot Paint Associates. Finishing… was another thing. Experience extraordinary. As a husband and wife team, we told each other many times that this would be a great memory. We paint our kitchen cabinets together.
There were parts of this project that we didn’t expect. So there are some things we’ve learned that we’ll pass on to anyone who’s doing the same type of project.
