If you haven’t had any good tools recently, now is the time to dig through the trunks, destroy the backs of the shelves, rummage through the pantry for forks, and search all over the place for you. crannies for lost garden gloves.

They need to be cleaned every year. It’s time to cut out the bent forks and the little painted cover. Get yourself a garden tool that works.

You don’t need to buy a lot of equipment – buy a few, but spend your money on quality…

With these seven essential garden tools, there are options. Most gardeners have several sizes of each, but if you have a medium sized garden it is not always necessary. If you have a professional gardener, they often bring their own equipment. Learn more about finding the right gardener for your garden here.

Start by purchasing equipment that matches your height and strength. You can then add to the collection as you learn more.

Gadgets & Tools To Make Gardening Easy In 2023

Full-size shovels give me the backbone to have smaller, lighter shovels. The one I use is called the Kent & Stowe Garden Life Spade. It is a good shovel for digging up a plant in an enclosed area such as a paved border. The same Kent & Stowe Garden Life model also has a lightweight digging fork.

Light shovels and forks are easy to use, but they don’t last long. Coming back to this post in 2023, five years after I originally wrote it, I can report that my lightweight garden and pitchfork lasted about 8 years before breaking. But it was eight years of good farming! So it’s a choice you have to make.

If you have a small or large yard, your list may be slightly different. In this post, Dan Cooper of The Garden asked Dan to list essential garden tools for his backyard. I was surprised by one or two of his suggestions.

When it comes to secateurs, don’t buy the cheap ones. I bought a pair of Felco secateurs 30 years ago. And I still use them. Some cheap secateurs are crazy – their springs move, their blades break…

And if you’re cleaning yourself, you’ll need loppers and a good pair of scissors.

I was sent a pair of Wilkinson Ultra Light Bypass Loppers to review. They are lightweight and cut well (see my review of New Agricultural Tools).

My niwaki scissors are the best scissors I have ever held. Costing around £70, they are not cheap but they are easy to use. Spending a lot of money on them makes me treat them with respect – I certainly wouldn’t spill them on wet grass because I had to hurry to answer the phone.

Pruning saws (£35-£159)  are the next option – but if you can get someone to help you with the pruning (I do), they will bring their own tools.

The biggest mistake is to choose cheap equipment. The saying “buy low and buy twice” applies especially to garden tools.

My Grandfather Passed Away And I Have To Look After This Garden, Tips?

Ten years ago, we were given a Snoeber Long Thin Trowel as a gift from a friend.  Despite being completely neglected by me, it is as thick and bright as the day it arrived.

The same cannot be said for the array of useless picks and forks available for free at various gift shops and supermarkets – or by non-tool gardening companies. It’s not just annoying when a fork falls out of your hand – you can. hurt yourself

Does your truck or rack look like this? Beware of empty tins of cheap hand forks…

A painted tool will often be of lower quality than plain metal. Paint covers wood and metal and is cheap. The paint will peel off quickly and the metal underneath will rust. If the wood and metal are cheap, the materials may bend or break.

The Best Shovels

Personally, I think any garden tool with flowers painted on it is probably gift shop fodder. The exception is the RHS Burgon & Ball range of tools, which are beautiful and functional. I have several sets of forks and napkins. One set was given to me by RHS to review and the other was a Christmas present from a friend I use regularly.

And the price is the offer. Good work costs money. You don’t need to buy a lot of tools, just a few good ones.

And there are creative solutions: if you’re looking for high-quality loafers, for example, you probably won’t wear them every weekend, then why not share a pair with a friend ?

I live in the historic market town of Faversham. We have markets every Saturday, as well as an antique and vintage market on the first Sunday of every month. Down in Old Faversham Harbor there are lots of antique / second hand / charity shops, including an antiques shop.

I also enjoy going to car boot shows where there can be lots of vintage gear available. However, the prices are rising as the antiques become fashionable (I think they are now mostly used as decorative items or as architectural materials).

Faversham’s vintage shop is down by the harbor in one of Britain’s oldest warehouses. Most tools are more than just gardening, but I got a hand fork and trowel and a hand rack for £13. Although they are heavier than today’s well-made tools, they seem to be made with difficulty.

Vintage furniture looks great, is solidly made, and can be a great way to find quality furniture at affordable prices.

However, they are usually a bit heavier than many of the best gadgets made today, so hold them in your hand and see how they feel when you lift them. Car dealerships and yard sales can be great places to find used tools.

Once you have purchased your essential garden tools, you need to take care of them. They will probably last for decades if you do.

Remove dirt or yard debris from my tools after use with a stiff brush. A quick wipe down with a damp cloth will extend the life and performance of your appliances and save you a lot of winter cleaning work.

I asked Mr. Middlesize if we had any fat cloths, and he gave an old cotton shirt for it. You can also use linseed oil, which is often available at hardware stores.

Secateurs are another item that appears in gifts for gardeners, but nothing is more difficult than using poorly made secateurs.

Secateurs are one of the seven most important garden tools, but cheap ones can tear stems and damage plants.

If you have good secateurs like Felco or Niwaki, it’s worth taking care of them. If you have Felco secateurs, you can send them to the service for £19.99 (including return postage). Felco also has some features, in case the secateurs break, as well as lots of information on sharpening and lubricating secateurs, which will be useful no matter what type you have.

On the other side of the web you have an all-purpose tool that many gardeners swear by. Fern Alder at Full Frontal (the community garden’s attempt at green front gardens) uses Kirpi from the Organic Gardens range (£18.95, pictured below).

Will an all-purpose garden tool save you from buying the rest? Not completely, but you can do a lot with it.

Given six pairs of garden gloves that match the clarity (a real bonus!), I put it in the washing machine at 30 degrees. I threw away the lonely gloves that the partners had left.
