Our favorite water filters from Brita and Culligan are easy to install, look good, and have certifications to prove their quality.

Make A Water Filter

The importance of having access to clean, fresh water in the kitchen every day can make all the difference. While most tap water is safe to drink, any chemicals used to purify it (cough chlorine) can affect its taste. A glass of water can not only color the taste, but it can actually affect the taste of tea and coffee.

That’s why we decided to find the best faucet filter by testing four popular models. We check how easy they are to install and use, filter efficiency, cost of replacement filters and what certifications they have.

One of our favorite filters, from DuPont, has been discontinued. We removed him as a winner and added a high performer from Culligan instead.

Best Water Purifier For Home: Ensuring Clean And Safe Drinking Water

Brita is a solid choice all around. This particular filter has the second fastest flow rate, is lightweight and sleek in appearance, and includes a button that changes colors depending on how close the filter is to completion. It also has the longest time between filter changes in the lineup.

Culligan impressed us with his fast pace and refined looks. It’s an affordable option that’s easy to install, if a little difficult to master when using it (you have to remove the pins in the middle of the flow to activate the filter). Replacement filters are available, hold up to 200 gallons, and are easy to find online.

While it may be easy to determine why you want to get a water filter, choosing the type and model of filter can be incredibly difficult. Here are the general types and how they work:

Faucet filters often promise to filter out nasty elements like lead, chlorine, cadmium, and mercury from water. It is important to make sure that this is true. Water quality authorities include the Water Quality Association (WQA), the National Sanitation Foundation (NSF), and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). Each institution ensures that applicants pass rigorous testing to qualify. Some certifications to look for are NSF/ANSI Standard 53, NSF/ANSI Standard 42, NSF/ANSI 401, and NSF/ANSI 372.

We want to point out that while most faucet filters remove many chemicals and contaminants from water, they cannot remove perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAs. According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, PFAs are “long-lasting, persistent chemicals that degrade over time.” To find out all the details about water filters, check out our water filter review.

The intricacies of the filtration process can vary depending on the particular model of water faucet filter, but the basics are the same. After attaching the filter and mounting bracket directly to the faucet, you turn on the switch (or remove the pin, in the case of the Culligan). The water flows until it reaches the filter section. According to Culligan, “the water goes through a ‘sediment trap.’ After that, we often send the water through an air-carbon and zeolite barrier, complete with channels that collect toxic substances like chlorine. This process ensures that some of the worst (and possibly weakest) offenders don’t end up in your glass.

When it comes to drinking coffee, for example, distilled water is essential. Former business writer Jesse Raub writes, “Soft water is not too difficult to remove coffee grounds from coffee grounds. “At the same time, it’s really hard to control the chemistry of your tap. A good rule of thumb is to start with a carbon water filter.”

In a blind test, we found that Britta, Culligan and DuPont removed all the flavors found in the salt water. (Until this test, we never knew we could explain water in so many ways.) Our unscented and undiluted water is pure silver, so we’re sorry that the water produced by PUR has traces of flavor.

We always love easy recipes when it comes to organizing any kitchen appliance. (We beat our heads against the wall in frustration when we build cheap furniture, thank you!) Most setups involve loading a filter cartridge into the top of the faucet and then attaching the entire device to the faucet itself. PUR, Brita, and Culligan each include adapters for faucets that are internally or externally threaded. But it’s all a bit of a joke when we find out the hard way that the Brita cartridge doesn’t screw in, filling the entire filter chamber with water and sending the cartridges up and down the mountain (and into our eyes). lesson? Make sure the filter is properly attached before turning on the water.

If you want to take the filter home, install it and drink your first glass of distilled water, think again. All filters require water to run through the filter for at least five minutes before use. The Culligan’s initial wash took even longer, about 10 minutes (we were surprised to find the wash water a little hot at first, even though we ran cold water through the system). The washer serves two purposes: 1. To activate the filter. 2. To clean the dust or other debris inside the cameras. Each filter also comes with a warning to only filter cold water – as hot water can damage the filter – so it’s important to switch to the ‘smooth’ setting before doing anything like washing dishes.

If you live in a place where you can’t drink water (get that bright color, friends!), then chances are you’re going to move your filter. Most faucet filters should be replaced every two to four months, depending on usage. Culligan has the shortest filter life as the company recommends changing each filter approximately every two months. At the other end of the spectrum, the British offered four months. PUR and DuPont recommend changing the filter every three months. Not sure if you can keep track of the time? We recommend Brita for your indicator light. When the filter loses its life, the light changes from bright green to bright amber to bright red.

During testing, we found the filters easy to install, use, and change. We also test how effective a filter is by performing a blind taste test and testing to ensure each one is officially ANSI/NSI certified.

What we love: Brita’s flow rate is second-fastest, filtering a gallon in one minute and 24 seconds Unlike other filters, the filter only needs to be changed every four months. What is better? It comes with a filter light that lets you know when the filter needs to be changed! Overall, the filter is light, simple and sleek and fits well with other chrome accessories. Also, at the time of testing it was half the price of DuPont (our leader, the winner was discontinued).

What we don’t like: We found that the filter cartridge needed to be securely attached to the main body of the filter unit, otherwise the accumulated water would blow the cartridge away. Once we got it right, we no longer had this problem.

What we love: Best of all, this filter produces clean, neutral water. We were very pleased with the Culligan’s flow rate: it cleans a gallon of water in one minute and 19 seconds, much faster than our previous winner, the DuPont. Replacement filters cost $19 per filter and are available. On a related note, the cartridge filter needs to be changed every 200 gallons, unlike the Brita every 100. The filter is uniform and beautiful.

What we don’t like: Activating the filter itself – after installation and washing – isn’t intuitive. To start the process we need to remove the PIN on the side of the device. This function only works if the water is already flowing steadily.

The filter is attached directly to the faucet. As the unfiltered water flows through the filter section, it is cleaned by a screen that filters out large particles. The next part of the process – the part that usually consists of activated carbon and zeolite – takes care of small impurities.
