Many homeowners choose to cover their bare floors with luxurious looking rugs. However, because carpets contain many absorbent fibers, it is very easy for carpets to become dirty or discolored.
While regular vacuuming helps remove dust and debris, it’s a whole different ball game when it comes to cleaning liquids or wet solids (hello, slime) that land on your carpeted floors. Those with children, pets or messy hobbies are well aware that removing carpet stains requires special cleaners, a clean sponge or cloth and lots of elbow grease.

Bissell Professional Carpet Stain Remover does an excellent job of removing stains. After four rounds of cleaning, only small marks and a chocolate sauce stain and a tomato sauce stain remained. The odors associated with the stains remain, but continued use of this product would likely eliminate those odors completely.
Even better, this product comes in a spray; those with limited arm strength will appreciate how much less effort it takes to aim and spray this cleaning solution on a moderate stain than using carpet stain remover in a regular spray bottle. As the cherry on top, this Bissell carpet spray is labeled safe for children and pets.
If you’re looking for a carpet cleaning spray that can tackle tough stains and foul smells, Angry Orange is the right choice. This orange-scented cleaner not only masks the odors that accompany test stains, it removes them completely (one of the few products we’ve tested that do this).
Although it excels at removing odors, the Angry Orange struggled a bit with the stains we tested. This spray managed to remove almost all of the tomato sauce stain, but there was still a noticeable halo of chocolate sauce after our scrubbing efforts.

Another thing to keep in mind: If you have pets at home, do everything you can to keep them out of the areas where you use Angry Orange cleaner. The warning on the label states “Cats and birds may be sensitive to concentrated levels of certain ingredients [in Angry Orange Carpet Spray].”
Hoover Oxy is one of the most effective carpet stain removers we have tested. Although the chocolate sauce stain is still visible, most of the darker part of the stain has been removed. The tomato sauce stain was mostly removed as well. After several applications, only a slight chocolate sauce smell remained.
One thing to keep in mind: the instructions on this cleaning product recommend that you leave the stain remover on for 10 minutes after applying it to the carpet; we had pretty good results following these instructions. However, if the stain is in an area where it cannot be left unattended or out of reach of children and pets, we recommend using one of the instant reusable carpet stain removers instead that.
Although the Rocco & Roxie carpet cleaner was unable to defeat the tomato stain on our test carpet, it was one of the few carpet cleaners we tested that almost completely removed the chocolate sauce stain. Likewise, we could still smell the tomato sauce in the carpet fibers, but the chocolate smell was almost gone.

It was mostly successful in getting rid of the smell of the stains too, although the smell of the tomato sauce lingered a bit.
This carpet spray must sit for 15 minutes before mopping. Furthermore, the instructions on the back of the bottle say that after absorbing the sprayed part of the carpet, it should be left to dry for 24 hours. This could be fine, except that there is a warning on the bottle that says pets should be kept away from that part of the carpet while it is drying. So, if you can’t keep your pets away from the stained area for 24 hours, it may make more sense to use a product that doesn’t need to dry as long.
The stains we used in our carpet cleaning solution tests included fox urine (U), chocolate sauce (CS), tomato sauce (TS), milk (M), red wine (RW), and dirt (D).

As you might expect, our tests of various carpet stain removers focused primarily on removing stains from carpets. We applied five different stains to a gray square of medium pile carpet: chocolate sauce, milk, tomato sauce, fox urine and dirt. In this case, we used fox urine instead of pet urine (as there is no easy way to get hold of cat or dog urine, while fox urine is often used to keep yard critters away, and can buy it on Amazon).
Every carpet cleaner’s square was covered in stains. After letting the stains sit on the carpet square for days untouched, we followed the application instructions on the label of each carpet stain remover.

After the carpet square was completely dry, we vacuumed each carpet square and evaluated the stain removal and odor performance of each carpet stain remover. We also rated cleaning products based on their ease of use, fragrance, and special features (eg child and pet safe, eco-friendly, etc.).
