Washer And Dryer Combo Review – Washers and dryers take up a lot of space, especially if you live in a small apartment. And if you have a separate washer and dryer (and who doesn’t), you’ll need to manually transfer your clothes to the dryer. Now, several appliance companies, including LG, Whirlpool, GE and Equator, are starting to combine washers and dryers into one machine. But are they good?

LG calls its electric washer and dryer combo the WashCombo. It offers 5 sq.m. lb. capacity and takes up the same space as a standard washing machine. The WashCombo was released in January 2024. LG delivered the WashCombo in black steel to my home and arranged for it to be professionally installed so I could take this exciting new machine for a spin, provided of words.

For two weeks, I put this washer/dryer combo through its paces. After using the WashCombo to wash clothes, towels, and thick bedding, I discovered that it may be a good laundry solution for some, but not all. If you’re ready to buy (hello for more space in your kitchen), the convenient purchase button is below. Or read on to find out how the LG WashCombo fared in my testing.

The new LG WashCombo is a full washer and ventless electric dryer combined into one unit. The WashCombo relies on a quiet inverter heat pump and direct drive motor to complete a complete wash and dry cycle without having to move your laundry between individual appliances.

WashCombo uses AI-based technology to detect fabric texture, soil level and load size to automatically select the correct functions, temperature and amount of liquid detergent. It is also designed for standard 120v without the need for special home electrical wiring.

TL: DR. After reading the unit’s manual and just one load of laundry, it’s clear that this washer/dryer combo does what it’s supposed to, but not at the speed LG suggests. For a single person or couple with average laundry needs, the WashCombo is a solid option that will keep up with the demand and save you some space. But for a larger family, I would recommend a large capacity washer (at least 5.5 cubic feet) and a separate, larger capacity dryer (at least 9 cubic feet) to keep track of everyone’s dirty laundry. maintain energy efficiency.

The LG WashCombo is shipped in a large box that requires two men to lift, unpack and install. The process took about 20 minutes from the time it was removed from the shipper.

The detergent drawer holds enough liquid for up to 30 loads. The washing machine determines how much to use in each cycle. Or you have the option of using detergent pods and tossing them into the machine when you put it in the wash.

One thing that sets the LG WashCombo apart from traditional washers and dryers is that it has two separate filters to clean. The top filter is a primary filter, while the filter in the lower left corner of the device is a water inlet filter that catches loose items like buttons or coins. If not cleaned regularly, the entire WashCombo can easily become clogged.

Owners should also maintain the door’s rubber seal by using a liquid chlorine bleach mixture and making sure no dirt, grit or anything else gets caught in the seal’s rubber folds. The manual also recommends wiping the door seal, the inside of the washer door, and the inside of the door glass between uses. The door should be left slightly open when not in use to prevent mold growth. Overall, this makes it a higher maintenance model compared to traditional cars.

To use the WashCombo, press the power button for about two seconds until the control touchscreen lights up. Turn the dial and select the desired cycle setting. The most common option is washing and drying.

To the right of the controller is a second touchscreen. It shows temperature, spin and soil settings and gives you access to additional cleaning options. Using the WashCombo for the first time, I entered five pairs of Levi’s jeans, selected the basic option, and pressed start. At this point, the car begins to spin slightly as the internal sensors do their calculations.

In about 30 seconds, the control dial screen informed me that the full wash and dry cycle would take two hours and 19 minutes, which LG does not recommend for two hours for this machine. The wash cycle ends after about 30 minutes.

During drying, do not be surprised if the timer increases automatically and suddenly. This is a frequent occurrence, especially with large or bulky loads. Jason Rich

Next, I loaded the WashCombo with six bath towels. This time I put the machine on the towels option and it said the wash cycle would take 47 minutes. It ended up being 55 to count.

But this is where things really start to go off schedule. The screen told me the drying cycle would take two hours and 10 minutes. When the machine beeped to say it was ready, two of the towels were super dry and crisp and four were still soaking wet. I turned the machine back on and set it to ‘dry only’. This time, the sensors said it would take another two hours and eight minutes to fully dry the towels, which had been in the dryer for over two hours. In the end, the entire process of washing and drying a load of just six towels took over five hours and 18 minutes. This extended schedule was repeated when I tried to wash a very large blanket.

As I continued to use the unit, I realized that it might be wise to invest in LG’s 27-inch Pedestal Shelf ($250) to raise the front-loader door and keep it from sinking. I suggest getting this accessory when you get the WashCombo so you can install it at the same time. Otherwise, you’ll need at least two people to lift the 246-pound WashCombo to install the pedestal later.

Although it is not included with the WashCombo, I also recommend placing an additional anti-vibration and noise dampening cover under the unit. It can be purchased on Amazon for under $25. Especially during the drying cycle, the WashCombo vibrates a lot, which can sometimes be felt throughout my house.

Despite many attempts, I couldn’t find a load of laundry that the machine could handle in LG’s recommended two hours. For heavier and larger loads, the complete process takes anywhere from 2.5 hours to five hours. In comparison, my previous washer took 40 minutes for a typical wash cycle, while the included gas dryer took about 50 minutes for a full drying cycle.

If you’re not counting on the WashCombo to complete an entire wash and dry cycle in just two hours, this device works well and, for the most part, does what it’s supposed to do. Yes, the WashCombo saves space. And yes, it eliminates the need to move loads from the hand washer to a separate dryer.

Even though it’s on sale, the LG WashCombo costs about the same as a premium washer and dryer combo, so you’re not saving money by buying just one appliance. What you’re paying for is the convenience of not having to manually move your laundry from the washer to the dryer, extra space in your home, and built-in “smart” functionality.

The washing function is great. However, I was blown away by the drying capabilities. I just loaded it in the washer a few times, completed the wash and dry cycle, and my clothes were completely dry. And when it does run without a hitch, it’s nowhere near LG’s recommended two hours.
