Hello! We are a married couple who are passionate about DIY, decorating, and home improvement! We are currently renovating Arched Manor in Leesburg, VA. Black is a great color for adding contrast, “edge” or shine, and as home and cabinet painters, we’ve painted more than our share of black outdoors, so we’re sharing our top four picks for the best black paint. Wanted to do. , There are many color options, but choosing one really depends on the situation where you want the dark wall color or cabinet color to be on the warm and cool spectrum. It’s that easy! Of all the dark cabinet colors or black wall colors we’ve used throughout Austin and San Antonio, here are our favorites.
Decide if you want a “warm” black or a “cool” black, or if you just want the most neutral, true dark black you can find.

A “warm” dark color may seem counterintuitive. When you think of black, you might imagine a night sky with blue hues. But for most homes, a warm black cabinet or wall color will be beautiful and rich without being “cold.”
In our experience, many homeowners think they want pure, deep black for their kitchen cabinets or front door or accent wall, but really they want a very, very dark charcoal gray. Dark gray will always be “read” as black in most contexts, because it will be the darkest color in the room. But gray can give you a more subtle color than pure black, and is a good choice if you’re afraid that dark black will look too stark or contrast-y in your space.
Here’s an example. You’ll see, there are very small differences here! But you are looking at little painted dolls on a computer screen. The difference increases when painting walls or shelves.
Here is a “short list” of what we think black paint colors are best, just look at some of our Austin projects and our projects in San Antonio, Texas. These are all dark cabinet paint colors, but the colors would look equally great on a wall, in a small powder bath with a dramatic mirror and light fixture, or in a connecting space like a hallway or vestibule. And yes, at the front door!

“Onyx” is a true black, a warmer version of Sherwin Williams’ “Tricorn Black” (which we’ll look at next). We used it to paint the black cabinets and hood in this stunning kitchen from Haven Design & Construction, located in San Antonio, TX.
You can see it’s a really warm black color, which is one of the best black cabinet paint colors we’ve used.
We also used “Onyx” on the shiplap wall and lower cabinets in this Austin, Texas kitchen with farmhouse style.
A true black neutral (at least, in our experience), “Tricorn Black” is our favorite whenever a homeowner wants a deep, inky black that’s as dark as possible. Two similar options are Benjamin Moore 2117-10, “Carbon Copy”, and Farrow & Ball’s “Pitch Black” (such an appropriate name, no?).

Let’s see “Tricorn Black” in action. Here we used it in high gloss on the shelves in this show-stopping bath in Alamo Heights, Texas:
It doesn’t get deeper than that! And we used the same dark color of cabinets this time:
And “Tricorn Black” also makes a nice front door color, as we did here on this Alamo Heights home (just a phone snapshot, but you get the idea):
A cool true black, “Inkwell” by Benjamin Moore 1631, is similar to “Midnight Oil.” Here it is in a much brighter version, in the Olmos Park home bar we featured:

And on this beautiful Olmos Park home that we painted for Styleberry Creative in San Antonio Texas, the dark paint color “Inkwell” was chosen for the front door and shutters.
Unless you’re sure you want true black, add a dark, dark brown to your list of sample options when choosing a paint color. You may be surprised! In most cases dark brown will be “read” as black. Our top picks:
Right off the bat, I know you’re thinking, “It’s gray?? It looks solid black!” And you are right, it happens. The point here is that dark charcoal gray can easily look black, but it can give you a little more richness than true deep black.
