Best Garden Tool Storage Ideas – In this post, I’ll show you how to make this easy DIY garden tool organizer from scrap wood!

If you have a few pieces of plywood left in your scrap pile, this is a great way to use them up!

This organizer may not fall into the “prettiest project” category, but it definitely falls into the “definitely practical” category. I’m going to make one this YEAR.

I don’t know why I waited so long because it took me 20 minutes to assemble this farm tool organizer and hang it on the wall. It’s only a 20 minute investment to make my life easier and free up floor space in my garage. Very worthwhile.

So if you’re like me and you’re tired of tripping over your shovels and rakes, let me show you how to easily hang them with wood you probably already have in your scrap pile. Ready to build? Let’s dive in.

This is a super easy weekend project PERFECT for summer. It’s a quick win that helps make that summer gardening project less frustrating.

Plus…it’s summer. It’s hot and you want a quick project that you don’t want to melt in the shop for hours. This ticks both boxes.

Feel free to be creative with your scrap here. I used ¾″ plywood because I always have a ton of plywood leftover. However, 1x boards are also suitable for this instead of plywood.

This DIY garden tool organizer is designed to be wall mounted so it needs to be screwed or anchored to the wall.

Since everyone’s collection, quantity, style, size and brand of garden tools will vary, I am sharing this guide as a general guide, not a specific building plan. I’ll show you how to adapt it to fit your own tools in steps 1 and 2 below.

Tool Shed Updates

I actually find this method easier because you don’t have to measure or cut anything to exact size.

Since everyone’s collection of page tools varies, I think this method makes it very easy to customize whatever you use.

First, I recommend that you collect all your garden tools and lay them out on the floor. Try to place them as close as possible without interfering with each other.

Arrange them so that what you plan to hang them on is close together and facing up. Some tools may hang from both ends, but some tools may only hang from one side.

Garage Storage Ideas For A Neat And Tidy Space

Once your tool is laid out, measure across it at the top to see how far it extends from one side to the other. This will tell you how long it will take you to make your back panel.

Then measure another way to see the height of your supports so everything has room to hang on them.

In my case, I think my back panel should be about 12″ tall x 48″ wide. So I went to my scrap pile to see what I could find.

If you don’t have anything in your scrap pile big enough for what you need, remember you can make some back pieces. It doesn’t have to be in one big piece.

Garden Tool Storage

I found a piece of ¾″ sanded pine plywood about the size I needed for the back. Then I took some small scrap plywood strips to cut for the hangers I would use to hang the tools.

These hangers do not have to be a specific size. I cut mine from about a 2 ½” wide strip of plywood. If you have scrap 1×3’s, this will work well too!

After choosing your backing (or pieces) and cutting it (if necessary), place it on the ground and place your tools on top of it (maintaining your original arrangement).

Make sure everything fits, then cut hangers from scrap plywood strips as long as you need to hold each tool. Again, this does not need to be a specific size as long as it is long enough to support the tool underneath.

Build A Mobile Tool Storage System

Once everything is laid out the way you want it, drill a ¾″ pocket hole in each side of the hanger on the side that will be against the support.

You don’t need to use a pocket hole here. Wood screws from the back to attach these pieces will work well.

But the pocket hole allows you to empty from the top without turning it over – making it easier.

Attach each part of the hanger to the back piece based on your layout from step 2 using 1 ¼″ socket head screws.

Ideas For Garden Tool Storage And Organization

Once all the hangers are on, they are ready to be mounted on the wall. Use a stud finder to find at least 2 studs, preferably 3, in the area where you want to hang your organizer.

For wood studs, use a 2 ½″ screw through the back piece and into the wall stud to lock it in place. Use at least 3 screws. Use a spirit level to keep it straight when attaching – you don’t want it hanging crooked!

If you don’t have wood studs or are installing on a cement block wall, use the appropriate anchors to attach the organizer based on what you are installing.

Then hang up your garden tools and enjoy the extra floor space these tools no longer use!
