Since everyone’s yard materials collection, the amount, shape, size, and quality will be different, I am sharing this tutorial as a guide rather than a construction plan. I will show you how to adjust it to fit your tools in steps 1 and 2 below.
I actually think this method is easier because you don’t have to measure or cut anything to get the right size.

First, I recommend gathering all of your yard tools and putting them down. Try to place them as close as possible without overlapping.

Make sure whatever you plan to hang is near the top. Some tools may be able to hang from both ends, while others may only be able to hang in one direction.
Once your tools are in place, measure them up to see how far they reach from one end to the other. This will tell you how long you need to make your support panel.
Then measure the other way around to see how tall your hanger needs to be so everything has room to hang on it.
In my case, I estimated that my back panel should be 12″ tall x 48″ wide. So I went to my store to see what I could find.

If you don’t have anything in your pile big enough for your needs, keep in mind that you can make more pieces later. It doesn’t have to be all in one big piece.
I found a piece of ¾″ sanded pine plywood about the size I needed for the back. Next I grabbed some pieces of plywood to cut the hangers that I will use to hang the tools.
These hangers don’t have to be a specific size. I cut mine from about 2 ½ inch wide strips of plywood. If you have scrap 1x3s, that would work great too!
Once you have selected and cut the mat (or pieces) (if necessary), lay it down and place your equipment on top of it (keep your original plan).

Make sure that everything fits perfectly, and cut the hanger pieces from the plywood pieces to the length needed to hold each one. Again, it doesn’t have to be a certain size, as long as it’s long enough to support the device they’re under.
When everything is lined up the way you want, drill ¾” pocket holes in each hanger on the edge that will be against the pad.
