When we moved into our 1920s row house, we knew it was the perfect home for us. Tucked away in a storybook neighborhood full of charm and abundant nature, for us it was the perfect place to put down roots. It has 3 full bedrooms, 1 parking space, 2 bathrooms and 1 shower room. This is a true gem of San Francisco.

As soon as we received the key we rushed to make the place our own. Despite the big bones but I wanted some added historical charm to offset the modern look. I like mixing old and new. And the house doesn’t need a lot of work, which is good. I was able to work quickly to make it mine. I also added arches, a fireplace, a breakfast room, a bathroom and a box shelf.
Exterior Door Buying Guide
It was great and we had all the upgrades my heart desired. But one upgrade eluded me. Whatever I do, whatever project I do next. It never seemed like the right time to update my builder grade door to a new Dutch style door.
Now you may be wondering, “Why? Your door looks great and I just wanted to say, “You’re absolutely right.” However, I couldn’t shake the urge to turn it into a “wow” element. And that doesn’t work for 136 Home The entrance is at the top of the stairs. And clamoring to open it up to let in the light and incredible views of Twin Peaks. Who wouldn’t want that view in their living room? I mean, if you have it, show it!
The solution to achieve this is simple. Replace our builder grade doors with brand new Dutch cottage style doors. I am very excited to be working with The Home Depot to make my dream come true. Adding a Dutch door to any home will instantly give your home a European charm. Although still very useful. It also has the added benefit of being able to open the top half of the door while keeping the bottom of the door securely closed. We have a dog and want to make sure he can’t escape while still allowing for views and fresh air.
I started by ordering online. It’s quick and easy and will custom fit your door to make sure you don’t want to get the wrong size. Or worse, get the right size but use the wrong keys. I want to have the security of knowing it’s right. My door came with an overlapping panel detail shelf because the detail was too pretty to include.

I should note that I ordered an unfinished model. But you can choose from many colors and textures.. It’s important to me that the door matches the black interior and exterior. I love black doors because they always look good. So I had to do some light sanding with a 220 grit sanding sponge to smooth out the rough edges. Then add a few more layers of paint. The work moves quickly and is a fun and enjoyable process. Grab your favorite podcast or great playlist.
I painted three coats. Don’t worry if the first layer is a little wet. It will get there. Then I waited for Home Depot to come back and help me install the new door. It is a privilege to have their support. When they arrived we removed the old door—they even removed it for me—and got to work.
Because we try to keep the door in its original form. All we had to do was remove the old molding and previous frame with my favorite jigsaw. Thanks to my friends at Home Depot, we rushed to get our new frame ready in the space. We use a mat to make sure it’s flat and level. This is very important
During the previous process of dismantling the door and frame I noticed that there was a few inches of space around it. Area where drywall and frame meet. So I filled this gap with Loctite insulation foam. It is flame retardant, insulating and provides protection from water. You don’t want any space inside and outside. So if you are facing similar spacing problems do this.

The door is securely locked into place thanks to the frame, screws and hinges that come with the door inside the frame and once the door is closed. We drilled it back into the original screw position. We had to open up the interior area in one place where the seams didn’t line up. But it’s easy. And it’s even easier with the help of my friend.
Make sure the door opens and closes easily. Also test the bolts that hold the top and bottom of the Dutch door together – you don’t want them misaligned. This took some skill—I accidentally painted on the bolts! Make sure you don’t make the mistake I did, but if you do, use a credit card or a smooth edge to remove the paint.
I couldn’t believe my eyes when the final formwork was installed. I quickly nailed the last board with my nailer and screamed with pure joy. Sunlight came in. It brings life to my room. Then I opened the top of the door and saw the mountain peak, I couldn’t believe how smoothly the door opened. It’s better than before!
I’m still very happy with this upgrade. And I dare say it’s my favorite. This is a project that combines form and function. It shines light into our room. Open to a beautiful view allowing plenty of fresh air to relax on the sofa on a Sunday afternoon, even the Dutch door thanks to its double-sided safety glass. Painting the door black is also a good decision, it looks amazing.
