If you’re thinking of updating your home’s exterior colors, there’s more to it than just a fresh coat of paint on the siding.
The Power Of Exterior House Paint Colors
The exterior of the home includes many different components that must work together to provide a cohesive look and feel. There are exterior paint colors that remain popular with most home buyers. Here are some paint colors to choose from before listing your home.
Home buyers want to be able to imagine themselves in their home. Neutral colors do not offend and are kind to the senses. They provide a neutral background so potential buyers can view their goods in your home. Neutral colors are also light, bright and inviting, which will go a long way in selling your home.
Contemporary-style homes, farmhouse-style homes, and traditional-looking homes go well with a mix of gray and beige, or what’s called “greige.” This color is classic and pleasing. When we buy a house, we don’t always get to choose the color of the first house we buy, especially when we buy it blind! Cathy Peshek from Poor Little It Girl was able to show how The Home Depot’s ProjectColor app was able to transform the exterior of her home into the color of her dreams.
I can’t believe it’s been almost a year since I appeared on BRAVO’s Buying It Blind! People always ask about our experience buying a home without having seen it, and honestly, it was a lot of fun. We still love our house and plan to spend as many years here as possible. Although small (about 1,650 square feet), our first house gives us all the space we need plus a yard for Bowie. Our neighbors are nice and there is so much development in our area that I can’t wait to see how much things change in the coming years.
But there was one thing about this house that really drove me crazy. And that was the exterior paint color. The moment I stepped into the front yard, I knew this paint color situation needed to be fixed. With the big tree fronting and center on our lot, the house is almost lost behind it. The day we moved in I said to Adam, “We have to paint this house!” So finally, a year later, I did it!
The original tan/beige color of our house looked so bland and like I said, it got lost behind the big tree. It took us a whole year, but we finally got around to painting the exterior of our house with the help of Home Depot. What seemed like a daunting task turned out to be much easier than I ever imagined! Then let’s begin.
Exterior Paint Ideas For Inviting Curb Appeal
Before working with The Home Depot on this project, Adam and I spent countless hours researching potential paint colors for our home. As you can imagine, there are literally a million options. Since it was a pretty big decision (hello, we’re painting a whole house!), we wanted to make sure we picked the best color for us and our house.
We ended up using the ProjectColor app from Home Depot to finalize the exterior paint color. In the app, you can take a photo of your home and “test” the colors directly on it to see how the final product will look. Really, it’s great! After trying several different shades (from blue, gray and even green), I chose Behr Cold Steel (MQ5-20). I loved the way the blue-gray came out on the big green tree, the white trim and the peachy pink door.
Once we finalized a color, we had to find painters! We did some research online to find the perfect company in our area to help us complete the project. I spent day 1 pressure washing the house and getting it ready for painting. The next day was the big day where they painted the entire exterior. It only took a few hours and the impact was immediate!
Not to brag, but isn’t my little blue house so cute and smelly? The curb appeal has improved 100% and my house seems happier. I also love how the green leaves of the tree pop against the blue color. Honestly, I’m obsessed!

But let’s face it, a house is never “finished”. There are already a few more things to do on my wish list to complete the exterior of our house. We definitely want to renovate our back porch/patio. In addition, we would like to have a new front door and add some plants. As we move forward in annual increments, I expect that by this time next year all those additional projects will be completed.
If you’ve been thinking about painting the exterior (or interior) of your home, start at The Home Depot! Their ProjectColor app really gave us peace of mind knowing we had found the best color for our home. It’s really nice to be able to visualize what the final product will look like.
