The first step in building a greenhouse is to install a flat area for your foundation. This guide shows how to build on brick and concrete, but you can also install on concrete, gravel, sand or dirt.
Flexpert Tip: If you are laying a foundation with gravel, sand or soil, you will also want to apply a layer of weed blocker or have another plan for weed management.

The windows you choose will influence how your walls are planned and arranged in the coming steps, but this guide will be flexible to your needs. For this project, recycled windows were used to reduce costs. If you’re not a fan of recycling or can’t find what you’re looking for used, you can always buy new windows in the size you like.

One thing to remember is that windowless areas will be covered with transparent sides, simulating windows and still protecting the interior from the elements.
This sleek greenhouse is designed to be installed in a garage or shed, so you need to frame three walls. The wall parallel to the structure can accommodate 2-3 windows and the wall behind can be wide enough to accommodate 1-2 additional windows. The front wall can be the entrance to the greenhouse and can be wide enough to fit a door and 1-2 narrow windows.

When you create a window opening, remember that the space must be completely square. You can check the fit of the window at any time, but you won’t attach the window to the frame until step 9.
Next, you will use 2x4s to build the walls of the greenhouse. Using pressure-treated 2x4s as bottom panels will help protect your DIY backyard greenhouse from premature rot and water damage.
Flex Glue can play an important role in the construction process. Use a glue gun to apply Flex glue to key joints during framing to help the structure continue as you screw or nail panels together. Super strong adhesives can also be used on larger surfaces to increase bond strength.
Additionally, you can use Flex Glue to glue pressure-treated boards to bond the wood to a concrete slab or paver foundation.

Flexpert Tip: You should use dual 2×4 headers at the top of each window and dual studs on the sides of each window to frame and support this feature.
Because this is a neat-style greenhouse, you need to ensure a sturdy structure. First, attach a 2x6x12-½” board to your garage or shed wall. This board is your header. The roof beam will attach directly to the header.
Carriage bolts are perfect for securing header panels to the side walls of an existing structure. Pre-drill through the 2×6 and through the edges to make room for the carriage bolts. Inside a shed or garage, additional 2x4s that fit snugly between the walls can help reinforce the walls.
Flexpert Tip: For large, heavy projects or side buildings, cut off the edges and backing and screw directly to the wall studs.

Next, you will attach the hangers to the headers. Each joist hanger will support the rafters, so you will want to arrange them according to the panels you are using for your DIY greenhouse. The corrugated clear polycarbonate roofs in this guide are 2′ wide and the 19-½” pitch is the standard size to allow for overlap of shingles.
Use a miter saw to cut the ends of each rafter to the required angle so that they are flush with the end boards. You will also need to cut the bottom of the beam that touches the outside wall of the greenhouse. The rafters should rest comfortably on the beam hangers and on the walls of the greenhouse.
Flexpert Tip: It helps to cut one rafter perfectly and then use it as a template for the remaining rafters.
Use nails to secure the rafters to the joists and the top of the greenhouse wall. Then, install three rows of 2×4 blocks between the rafter beams. These blocks will help support the roof and keep the rafters from warping over time.

After hanging the roof, you can turn your attention back to the space framed by the window. Install window sills, window frames and doors as needed. Make sure the window sill is angled to improve exterior drainage.
Flex Seal Liquid creates a durable rubber coating that repels water and protects wood from the elements.
To start, stir (don’t shake) one gallon of Flex Seal Liquid and use the paint tray and roller to brush up and down each joist for thorough coverage. Switch to a brush to cut where the roller can’t reach. Full and complete coverage of the wood in a DIY backyard greenhouse will preserve it and help withstand moisture.
Flexpert Tip: It is best to apply Flex Seal to all wood structures before installing windows, doors and roof panels. Allow at least 24 hours for Flex Seal Fluid to dry and cure before applying additional coats and/or proceeding to the next step.
Choose The Right Greenhouse Roof Pitch Angle
In this step, you will attach the roofing sheet using screws designed for metal roofs. These screws help retain moisture. Working one panel at a time, screw the 2’x8′ lengths to the roof beams and 2×4 blocks. The panels should be parallel to the rafters and overlap with two folds to protect the rafters and the interior from moisture or wind penetration.
Flexpert Tip: Note that this guide uses 8-foot lengths of roofing panels, but longer lengths are also available if your structure’s dimensions vary.
Now it’s time to install the windows and doors for the DIY conservatory. Check to make sure it opens and works as intended. Use a glue gun to apply a bead of Flex Seal around the perimeter of each window to air seal and create a strong bond.
Finally, address the space above and below the window. To insulate the area from the elements, cut additional clear roofing panels to fit each space. Use the remaining screws to attach the panel to the framing structure.
