Washer Dryer Homemade Pedestals – This is a project we’ve been wanting to tackle since we got our new washer and dryer a few months ago. I really like front loading engines, but having them higher up is better. You know what’s inconvenient? The pedestal is worth 1 million dollars. Some of them are very expensive! We know we can do some DIY for a fraction of the cost and get a more custom “integrated” look.
Just to let you know, everyone’s size will be a little different. We’ve built this before and it should definitely be adapted to your space. That being said, I cannot provide the exact size and cut list for your wood.

First, remove the washer and dryer so you can carefully examine how much space you actually have. Measure from wall to wall, wall to cabinet, etc. It’s not very accurate because there are other factors like dryer vent, outlet, etc.

You will use 2x10s on 2″ sides for your frame. This makes your pedestal about 10-11″ tall when all is said and done. First, we make a “U” shape, placing the longest piece in the front and two side pieces on each side. I *think* the piece is about 57″ long and our sides are about 36″ (?). Since I had a broken leg, my husband cut it off and I forgot the exact measurements, but yours will probably be different. We then used two more (the same length as the “side” pieces to serve as central supports. So 4 vertical pieces. We used a pneumatic nailer to nail everything into place.
Next we measure the gaps (this is not a perfect space because no one will see the supports and no one has time for that *wink*) then we cut 3 supports (horizontal) and nail them in place. It’s staggered so we can get our nailer in there to nail into each board.
We then measured our front piece, top piece (deck), and all exposed sides (you can only see one of our sides) and asked Home Depot to cut 1/2″ MDF to their size for us. We marked the point for the dryer vent and the MDF nailed in place.
Then you can get creative. I used a baseboard and cut out the base of the plinth and then used a 1.5″ cutting grid to cut out little squares on the exposed front and sides. This gave it a special look and covered the nail holes when nailing the MDF to the frame.

Finally, we caulked and painted the entire piece with Behr Ultra Pure White in Semi-Gloss. This is the paint we used on the doors and trim throughout our house and I wanted it to match. You can do fun colors if you want!
And that! It’s really simple and to be honest, going to Home Depot to cut the wood is the most time consuming part. We did everything in a few hours on a Saturday and I loved the result! Add at least 2 inches to the combined length and width of your washer and dryer and build two frames that size. Use a 2×3 for one and a 2×4 for the other. Then cut two brackets to fit inside the frame, roughly dividing the space into three. Attach the sections with a pair of 3-inch screws at each butt joint as shown.
The legs should be tall enough to allow the baskets to fit between the frames. Measure the baskets, add about an inch to the height, and cut a 2×4 to that size. Cut another 6-inch-long piece and spray paint and primer on one for a finished look. After it dries, cut a notch in one end to fit the 2×4 frame and a second notch in the other end to fit the 2x3s. Cut the notches with a jigsaw as shown. Repeat the process for the other three corners.
Use 2½-inch deck screws to attach the shorter legs to the longer legs between the notches, creating a leg for each corner with the painted part facing inside the pedestal. Add construction adhesive to the long notch and place the leg at an angle so it fits into the 2×4 frame. Drill a pilot hole in the leg and insert it into the frame with 2½-inch deck screws as shown. Repeat with remaining legs. Repeat the process for the other three corners.
Using a circular saw and ruler, cut the melamine panel to the dimensions of the bottom frame. Screw together two scrap 2×4s and use them to mark the notches in the corner of the panel so it fits over the legs. Cut the notches with a jigsaw. Leave the panel in place and attach it to the frame with 2-inch finish nails every few inches on the sides and back as shown.

Apply construction adhesive to the notches at the top of the legs. Then snap the 2×3 frame into place as shown. Screw the outside of the frame and legs together with 2½-inch deck screws.
Measure the length and width of each side, then use a circular saw to cut the panel pieces to fit. Cut two pieces to do the same and then paint the beadboard first. Let it dry.
Use clamps to hold a piece of beadboard at the back, flush with the top of the frame and the corner, so the pattern faces inward. Secure the panel with 1¼-inch deck screws every few inches. Place the second back panel next to the first and insert it in the same way. Repeat the process for the side with the cord facing out, as shown.
Cut two 1x4s and four 1x5s to the height of the base. Position a 1×4 on the side with the edge flush with the front corner and secure with nails. Next, make a corner board by nailing a 1×5 to the front surface of the plinth to cover the flush edge of the 1×4. Repeat the process for the other front corner, then add a 1×5 edge again on both the sides.

Mark each 1×4 side rail to fit between the posts as shown. Cut it to length and secure it with nails. Repeat the process for the two front rails and fix the lower one so that it covers the edge of the melamine panel. The exposed molding under the bottom rail will be hidden and shaped in the next step.
Place the top of the plywood on the plinth and corner cut lines using the cutting surface as shown. Remove the top part and cut with a circular saw. Drive 1¼-inch deck screws through the plywood and into the upper frame.
Hold the base frame strip to the front of the pedestal, overlapping both ends. Mark the location of the 45-degree exterior miters on the back of each end and cut them with a miter saw. Secure the pieces with nails. Cut two side pieces with a miter on the front and a straight cut on the back. Nail them into place. Repeat the process to shape shoes.
Mark, square and install the front and side pieces of the panel framing flush with the top of the plywood. Fill all joints, nail holes and screw holes with paintable caulk. Prime the top of the plywood and then paint the base. Enlist a strong friend to help put the machine in place.
