One of the most underutilized areas of our home is our laundry room. There was no storage of any kind and the appliances did the bare minimum for our laundry care needs. Our laundry room opens to our kitchen and living room, and seeing it in such a sad state was a daily reminder that our family’s needs were not being met. This summer we decided to tackle our laundry room and create a laundry space that feels like an extension of our home.

To understand how far our laundry has come, you have to look at the previous one. You won’t believe it’s the same place, trust me!
We started our search for washing machines by visiting Home Depot online. We use filters on the site to help us choose a washer and dryer that meets our family’s needs. Since our laundry room is small, a side setup gives us more space, and it allows me a small counter top to store laundry essentials and a place to fold laundry.
I fell in love with the LG High Efficiency Front Load Washer and the LG High Efficiency Front Load Dryer; The fingerprint resistant black stainless steel color looks great and I felt that using a darker color would help organize our space.
Home Depot’s website has videos that share information on how to measure new appliances. This was critical because our area was small. We visited the appliances in store and loved their look and all the features.
Laundry Room Makeover Ideas
LG washing machine has several cycles to make washing clothes easier. I use these laundry cycles regularly for my family. Suitable for bed and clothing allergies; I use this cycle on my son’s clothes after playing outside on the grass. A bicycle helps to clean your clothes. I like the sanitary cycle for my husband’s work clothes and the hand wash for my more delicate items.
I also love LG’s amazing TubWash feature, which cuts laundry time by 20 minutes for large loads. No more waiting for hours to wash large loads of laundry. Hands down, my favorite feature of the LG dryer is the steam option. I use the Steam Fresh cycle on shirts, blankets and bedding. I’m also a fan of the Fresh Up cycle; I used this feature a lot on my son’s swimwear this summer. You swim every day, this feature keeps your swimwear and towels fresh.
The ordering and delivery process was very easy. The delivery guys installed our new washer and dryer in record time and made sure everything was working properly before we left. With our new washer and dryer, I’m inspired to tackle the rest of our laundry room renovation and finally create a space where laundry doesn’t feel like a chore.
We have subway tile in our kitchen and decided to bring the same look to our laundry room with Daltile Restore’s glossy white tiles. These tiles are a smaller version of the subway tile in our kitchen and fit perfectly into the small baseboard in our bedroom.

This was our first mosaic project and we were a little nervous. Fortunately, a Home Depot store associate was able to help us select the right materials to complete our project. Above our washer and dryer, we also installed floating shelves to provide extra storage. For years our laundry room didn’t have a counter and it was a nuisance. Socks kept disappearing behind our washer and dryer. When the installers moved our old washer and dryer, we were embarrassed to see all the lint and clothes that had fallen behind the machines.
Using PureBond Birch plywood that we cut at Home Depot, we were able to make a counter for our space. I browsed the hardwood floor department for inspiration to find the perfect stain color. I found a sample of natural wood that I liked and used that to help me choose a suitable Varatane stain. The natural stain was wonderful and helped enhance the beauty of the wood. As a bonus, it dries in under an hour! I wanted the room to be bright and open, so I painted Swiss Coffee by Behr on the walls. I also gave the trim a fresh coat of fresh white paint.
I am so in love with our new laundry room and I love my new appliances. The LG washer and dryer in our laundry room was a real game changer. I love how big and bright our space feels. I love all the storage that is out there now. Laundry is no longer a chore. The room is now a space I enjoy. Also, since our laundry room is where our guests enter the backyard patio, it’s no longer an embarrassing sight. What a great feeling!

We are serial renters (military life!), so when Home Depot asked me to renovate a laundry room, I knew the perfect spot. Does this space inspire you to clean? It sure doesn’t do it for me and I need all the motivation I can get when it comes to cleaning.
I’m not sure why the builder decided to put the dryer exhaust on the left and the water lines on the right. I think it makes more sense to work from left to right. Washer on the left, dryer on the right, am I right? Perhaps, this was a design choice.
Another interesting design choice was how the water lines and outlet are placed on the wall – how poetic! I mean, look at them – they’re not on the same level. (Am I the only one who gets angry at this sort of thing?)
How To Build A Laundry Pedestal
Since I was planning to add a countertop above the washer and dryer, we had a plumber and electrician run the water lines and outlet so they wouldn’t interfere with the countertop lines. Then, we patched the drywall.
