When painting your home, you probably put a lot of thought into the colors you choose for your bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, and other interior spaces. But exterior paint colors are just as important (or more so). If you choose the right shades for your home’s facade, you can highlight features that might otherwise go unnoticed. That’s why you should think beyond the central color of your exterior that you use to paint your foundation or siding – you should also choose coordinating shades that will create a visually appealing color palette for your trim, shutters, doors and windows. Whether you prefer soft neutrals or bold brights, we have the color combinations to make your home the best on the block.
Black And White And Loved All Over
Consider the natural features of your home, such as brick or stone, when choosing an exterior paint color. “A rich stain color applied to shingles draws attention to the home’s foundation,” says Amy Wax, an architectural color consultant and creator of the Color911 app, which allows homeowners to see which colors match well. “Using a soft trim color draws attention to the exterior shingles, making this home a purposeful statement.”
Creating a color palette with soft shades is a great way to emphasize details while respecting the original design of your home. “Understated and elegant, muted green-gray body colors are a great way to accent clapboards, shingles, and stucco in this elegant Victorian,” says Wax. “I added a muted trim color to maintain the soft look of this home, giving the historic color palette a more updated and inviting look.” The deep red accent color gives the house a subtle hue.
Stucco homes typically don’t have textured shingles or clapboards, so they need a great color palette to enhance their simple design. “The colors of this tall, stucco house are perfectly balanced to bring out the appeal, while the bold roof pays homage to the color,” says Wax. “A light terra-cotta exterior color is a great way to paint a stucco surface with a natural-looking, but bold [shade] confidence.”
Tudor houses on this scale make a statement on their own, but they also need colors that complement their commanding stature. The neutral body color used here, like the black-grey seen on the beam, looks light and creamy when paired with a saturated color. “For period homes like this, it’s all about colors that stand out from each other without competing, that grab the attention of all who pass by,” says Wax.
What Are Roof Eaves On A House? (2024)
Add charm to Craftsman-style and rustic homes with earthy tones like brown and white. “The pairing feels fresh while enhancing the natural features of your home’s exterior, and the saturated cinnamon-brown naturally enhances masonry and architectural elements,” says Sarah McLean, color expert and stylist at Dunn-Edward.
Want to give your home a nice color? Make sure to have a shade of shadow to balance it out and give your eyes a place to rest. “The bold body color here, enhanced by the accent window color, adds a playful twist to this home’s strong color statement,” says Wax. “The neutral first floor siding color provides a warm heart to the jewel-tone siding upstairs.”
If the roof color dominates your home, you can tone it down by choosing complimentary colors for other exterior details like body and trim. “Many colonial homes present a unique challenge because the roof is such an important element in the color scheme of the home,” says Wax. “To complement the reddish brown color of the roof, I drew attention to the front porch with clean white columns and a historic blue door, creating an entrance that is the focal point of the exterior design.”
Letting your home’s architecture and unique qualities guide your paint color choices will create a final look you’ll be happy with. “I updated the exterior [of this elegant Tudor] by adding layers of color in a different blue-green family,” says Wax. “The colors I chose for the wood accents bring out the rich stone colors and they both look great. I added new colors for the siding, beams and shutters to emphasize the details without detracting from the warmth of the natural stone..”

Consider the plants around your home and choose colors that complement your natural landscape. “I chose a body color in the gray family—a hint of slate blue—to give this house a little more personality,” says Wax. “Rich accents, using colors from around nature, draw attention to the front entrance, giving this home real charm.”
Mena likes to showcase the home’s “eye candy or ornate details” with bright, muted paint and a body-colored background. White paint on the decorative millwork and under the eaves creates a neutral home palette, with waxy brown accented by soft brown metal.
Don’t shy away from fun colors when choosing a palette for your home. “Although dark colors may be seasonal for this vintage gem, my goal was to lighten it up and make it more attractive and interesting,” says Wax. “With a sweet body color like vanilla ice cream, the colorful details draw attention to the handcrafted, quality millwork that sets this home apart from the rest on the block.” In a nod to the home’s history, wax plum-colored shutters were chosen, a throwback to the jewel tones popular in the Victorian era.

Since we moved into this house 4 years ago, one of my biggest jobs has been repainting the ears. I started thinking about replacing the gray one we had last year with this beautiful black one. I stumbled upon the colors, then it was too cold, and then I got too pregnant. Fast forward to July and I can finally gather my energy to start this project!
We’ve already made good progress on the exterior of this house, just changing the roof and increasing its curb appeal by a thousand, but I knew painting the eaves and gutters would be finished.
I took this project for 15 minutes each while the baby napped. Sleep started getting longer and I started doing more but she was dragging. July turned into August and I was done by September!
How To Paint Eaves (with Pictures)
Before I moved on, I used Sherwin Williams’ Eggshell “Tricon Black” to match Behring’s exterior marquee paint color. Probably the best black ever and probably the color I will paint my future home.
I used a brush for 99% of this project and rolled Austen eaves on the right side of the house which was too tall to reach safely with a brush. There were edges that needed brushing and only one piece left to paint until it was done so I dug out the roller.
This project wouldn’t have taken this long if I hadn’t half-decided that I wanted to paint the windows too. It just didn’t look right with painted eaves and no windows. Above each window was a storm window so it took twice as long to lift them
