If you’ve been around for a while, you probably remember that we used brass hardware a lot (especially in the Farmhouse kitchen) and shared the 1 year and 3 year brass aging process. But let me back up and say exactly what unlacquered copper is and why it’s my favorite.
Clean And Re Finish Old Door Knobs And Hardware
Unvarnished brass is a type of brass that has not been treated with a clear coat or varnish, allowing the metal to age naturally. It will acquire its own character and color over time. The polished brass doorknob found at Poplar Cottage…will turn a rich warm gold tone or even a deeper, simpler brown as it ages. Depending on how often the hardware is used and the humidity in the home, the patina will develop faster or slower.
When buying unvarnished brass door hardware, it is important to consider how you will use the door. Is this a bathroom that needs a lock? Or a closet where a simple handle without a lock would suffice? Here’s a breakdown of the most common types of hardware assemblies:
We bought all the privacy buttons for Poplar Cottage because the only doors are in the bathrooms and bedrooms.
On these handles, the small button next to the handle is a lock. You can push it to lock and pull it out or twist the inside door handle to unlock it. It’s a simple, elegant locking solution.
