Best Interior Doors For Home – We needed a lot of foundations for this final build. One of these is the interior door style. I designed most of the interior around a specific door style: the same door with raised 5 panels. Why are you asking? I knew there would be lots of white + lots of natural light throughout the house, so I wanted the doors to feel like a fixture in the house rather than just blending in with the white walls. Now, if it were up to me we’d have all the old doors! I found some at the beginning of construction, but our contractor wasn’t sure about it. For good reason, old doors cannot be returned and the standard dimensions of doors are now wider than most old doors.
The next best option was to order a door in the same style but modern! We eventually placed our order through a local lumber company. Our only option for the raised panel door was solid core. (Solid core is more expensive than molded doors, but I’m not sure if molded doors are on raised panels.) We chose pine because the wood and other furniture pieces we used would be pine. It is considered a standard door no matter where you order this style. (So it’s not easily in stock.) Expect to wait a few weeks, especially during the pandemic, but I promise it’ll be worth it!

The doors arrived before they were completed. (It would have cost a lot more if they were pre-made and already pretty expensive.) We used our favorite stain mix. Painting and varnishing the interior doors took a lot of work but we are very happy with the result.
Interior Door Buying Guide
Step 1 – Wipe the doors to remove dust/dirt. Sand lightly (with high-grit sandpaper) if necessary to remove imperfections.
Step 2 – Pre-apply the stain to avoid stained areas while painting. We use Minwax Pre-Stain. I used a cut piece of t-shirt to apply the pre-paint. It comes out transparent, gives a wet appearance when applied, but dries clearly.
Step 3 – Apply the stain. We mix equal amounts of Minwax English Chestnut and Minwax Natural dye to achieve a medium brown color. We applied the stain with the piece of t-shirt we cut. Since this was our own combination of stains, we changed the mixture frequently. We also wiped up any excess stains with towels as we went along. We painted one side of all the doors and let them dry overnight. The next day we turned them all over and colored the other side.
For details and reverse edges, we found it easier to fill the area with stain and wipe the rest with a towel.

They look darker in these pictures because they lay flat in our workshop. Keep this in mind when painting projects where they are finished. Doors are hung vertically; The light will hit the door differently on the inside. It’s a good idea to take a door (project) in to see how it will look inside your home before moving on to the next step.
Step 4 – Apply a clear coat with a foam roller. We used Minwax Polyurethane on satin floors. John ended up doing three coats; Lightly sand (with 220 grit and then wipe) between coats. Man, are the doors finished smooth? You don’t need to apply three coats, but you definitely need to apply at least two coats. This coating makes a big difference in durability and appearance.
