But the visual value you get from installing a new garage door is unmatched in the world of curb appeal. You get a lot for your money! Remodeling Magazine found that the ROI on a new garage door is really high, almost 100% in most places! That’s why new garage doors are one of the first things I like to budget for when working with clients.

So today, I’m going to walk you through the things you’ll want to keep in mind when thinking about updating your garage door. Not just some of the best brands to look at, but all the questions you’ll need to answer before you get ready to buy.

Skip to section How to buy a garage door What style of garage door should I buy for my home? Who made the garage door? What else do I need to know? How can I save money on garage doors? What is the process of purchasing a garage door? Is a new garage door worth the cost?

Garage doors come in a variety of options. They fall into a unique situation of ‘inventory customization’. This means you choose from a stock set of options that make your final garage door uniquely you. While Ready to Ship options are available, you still have to wait the same amount of time as a custom part. You’ll spend about the same amount of money for boring-looking options that come ready to ship. So why not get what you want?

Ordering a door takes more time than you think. So, first of all, determine when you want to install it. Not who will do it, but when it should be done. A garage door usually takes 16 to 24 weeks to build from the day you order it and another 2-4 weeks to schedule installation once it arrives.

Next, you’ll want to know what size door opening you’re dealing with. Measure the existing door opening and then the door itself.

Garage doors built today usually come in 2 standard sizes: 16 feet wide by 7 feet tall for a 2-car garage or 8 feet wide by 7 feet tall for a 1-car garage. But usually, if your house is older, your door will be a slight variation of these sizes.

If your door falls into this category of minor variations, I would first consider modifying the opening (ie the garage walls themselves) to fit a standard door size. Modifying the opening to fit a standard door can save you thousands of dollars over the increased cost required to manufacture a custom sized door.

Residential Garage Doors

Garage doors in standard sizes and using stock options can cost anywhere from $1500 for a plain white steel door with no panels or windows to $25000 for an aluminum frame door with full windows. Custom wood doors go up from there. Pretty big range, right?

I would give your entire budget as much as possible to the garage door. Because even though the doors are expensive, they add so much appeal to your overall design that it’s worth it.

If you really can’t shake the sticker shock of the cost of a new door, see if you can modify the existing door with paint or panels to update the look. You can also add decorative hardware to freshen up the design if you have a steel door. Often, it’s DIY updates that can really save the budget.

And if your existing door has dents? Sometimes, if the outlet is located far from the edge of the panel, it can be fixed or removed like in a car. Sometimes you can purchase replacement panels if you know the original manufacturer of your existing door and also have the serial number. But remember that minor repairs like this are rare situations.

What To Know Before Upgrading Your Garage Door

After you know your timeline, dimensions, and budget, you can start thinking about what it will look like. We are blessed to have a wide variety of doors on the market these days. White raised panels with arched windows are no longer the only option! But it can also be very difficult to know the right choice for your home.

Start by looking at the inspiration images you are using for your project. What style of doors do you see? If you keep the same door style over and over again, this is where you should start looking.

Next, determine the style of your home. There are doors that make more design sense for a suburban cottage than a farmhouse or mid-century modern, and almost all of them will look good in a farmhouse. Do you want a wooden or wood-like door? Or a colored door? do you like windows How many windows – and do you need privacy? These are all things you should ask yourself before you start shopping.

There is no real answer here. Because the best garage door for you is the one that meets your style, function and budget needs – and hopefully has the best lead time! And there are many teams you can work with to order and install your door, both from independent dealers and big box suppliers.

But there are some brands that continue to deliver great doors at great prices, no matter where you buy them.

At the (relatively) more affordable end of the spectrum, Wayne Dalton primarily manufactures traditional style aluminum, steel or fiberglass doors in a variety of colors and wood finishes. They offer a very affordable line of contemporary steel panels (models 8300 and 8500) that are great for modern homes and can be painted on site to match your exterior design. Available nationwide at Lowe’s and locally at independent dealers.

Clopay has the widest variety of designs, finishes, colors and prices. They also offer factory color options with their ColorBlast service in partnership with Sherwin-Williams, meaning you can get the exact color you want without painting on site. Their doors are made in North America with a long history of quality. Available nationwide at Home Depot and locally at independent dealers.

While very nice (and totally worth the cost if you have one), if the price of an Avante door gives you sticker shock, you should check out the Modern Steel line. You can set up a modern full window steel door in one of their new Lustra finishes, using four ‘long panel full display windows’ on all four panels to get a look similar to the Avante, for almost half the price. The main difference is that while Avante window frames are very cleanly integrated into the door structure, modern steel window frames are separate frames set into the door panels protruding slightly from the door panel. So it’s not a 1:1 swap, but it’s a pretty subtle difference that could save you a few thousand dollars. You should work with your provider to see the differences closely before you make this decision!

There are a few other non-design questions to think about before you place your garage door order. Things like construction, insulation needs, closures and openings.

The construction takes into account how isolated your door is from the environment. Since garage doors are usually an integral part of your garage structure, you should treat them like a wall and think about how much hot or cold air you want to let in or out of your garage. Usually based on R-Value, meaning the higher the number, the better the door will insulate the interior of the garage from heat or cold. Each supplier will offer a range from ‘better’ to ‘best’ based on your climate and budget needs.

The material your door is made of goes a long way to determine what your long-term sustainability will be.

Depending on where you live in the US, there are also air requirements. This is what the wind code number or wind load is usually documented and determined by the Texas Department of Insurance, the Florida Building Code, and more specifically, the Miami-Dade County codes. This will affect not only On how the door itself is designed (especially the windows) and what the door is made of but also on how the opening is set up in your garage, your supplier can help you narrow down the options available to your local needs.
