Best Door Sensors For Home Assistant – I upgraded all the devices in my home to work with Home Assistant and canceled my subscription to the proprietary service. One of the latest subscription services I have in my house is a ring door and window sensor. The Ring one really works. But membership isn’t free. Since I know this sensor will be installed in my home for 10 years or more, it will save me money on switching to a different, non-subscription device.
That’s why I was excited to see that Zooz has launched a new series of Z-Wave door and window sensors that are fully self-managed by a Z-Wave hub or Home Assistant that works as a Z-hub. -Wave The advantage of Z-Wave and Zigbee devices is that they use much less power than WiFi, making them a much more suitable technology for battery-powered devices (such as wireless door and window sensors).

My criteria for this upgrade are: I don’t want a system that’s worse than the one I started with. This makes things easier. It’s a little tricky because the system I started with works pretty well and is very small. The existing Ring system looks like this:
As you can see, it’s quite small. It’s battery powered and completely wireless. This is what I would compare the Zooz sensor to.

The important thing to know about opening this is that it will open opposite of what you think.
Repurpose Traditional Home Security System
It looks like the part that came off was the lid. Not this one. The lid is actually the largest part. You can see what I mean here:
Small white clip The two at the bottom are the only things holding it in place. I don’t need the provided option to turn on this device. All you have to do is apply a little pressure and try lifting it. The clip will then come free from the two retaining clips.
Within Home Assistant, go to Settings -> Devices and Integrations, then click “Add Integration” at the bottom right of the screen. You will see something like this:
Now select “Add Z-Wave Device” If you haven’t already done so, pull up the tab in Zooz to enable Battery.
Garden Gate Sensor
Now quickly press the small button next to the battery three times. This will put the device in pairing mode. The light on the device will start blinking.
You’ll receive a message as soon as a device is discovered and added to Home Assistant! You will be asked for your PIN which is located on the inside of the cover.
Now I recommend clicking the pencil at the top right of the screen to edit the device and giving it a name so you can recognize the sensor and assign it a location.
Installation is easy Replace the device and remove the double-sided tape. Place it in the following location:

And look! The Zooz sensor is slightly smaller than the Ring sensor. This gave me a much better magnet mounting position.
Note that you need to align the gray lines like I have. so that the magnetic sensor is aligned with the magnet. That’s all!
That’s enough for Ring here. I have now abandoned all subscription services in my home to proprietary services. Now that I’m self-hosting my home sensors via Zooz 700 series door and window sensors, the only thing I still need to do is build a system that creates sound effects when doors/windows are opened/closed to provide functionality. Exactly the same.. I will be doing that on the website and will mention it here soon.
I reviewed the DIY (do it yourself) option with door and window sensors using an ESP module. It’s a great solution that I use in other parts of the house, such as air quality sensors. But it is clear that for door and window sensors that are very small and use coin cell batteries, DIY would have to sacrifice too much.

I think in the next few years this will be much cheaper to do yourself as the capabilities of ESP modules continue to expand. There are now ESP modules with Zigbee included, but you still need a board/kit to use them. And I don’t see many modules that would be good candidates to replace window sensors. My requirements for choosing a touch sensor were that it must work with Home Assistant, it must be available on Amazon, it doesn’t require a hub other than a Zigbee or Z-Wave dongle, and it costs less than $50 (US).
From the 10 touch sensors I chose None of the sensors are WiFi devices. This is because most of the WiFi I’ve seen is powered by Tuya, which I like to avoid if possible. (Because I don’t want to rely on the cloud) and many of them are clunky and bulky due to their large size. Batteries are required to connect to WiFi. For this reason, we’ll only be looking at Zigbee and Z-Wave devices, and I’ll be adding them to Home Assistant using ZHA and Z-Wave JS.
