A snow shovel is a great winter tool, but a garden shovel is a useful, all-purpose lawn tool that can be used for gardening, mulching or fencing. While in essence, shovels are quite similar, there are different shovels that specialize in different jobs. We’ve tested garden shovels, digging holes and moving dirt to find out which shovel is right for you.

It is lightweight, strong and offers comfortable hand stability and a fiber shaft. For something more affordable, the Fiskars Long Handle Steel Digging Shovel (at Amazon) offers sturdy steel construction. However, there are plenty of shovels to buy on our list.
The best garden shovel is the Hoyman Digging Shovel. This bad boy is at the end of the shaft and closer to the blade that you carry with your other hand. This provides an extra level of comfort, especially when not wearing work gloves, and keeps your hands safe even when working in wet conditions.
In addition, the blade itself is slightly serrated, so it cuts through hard dirt, sod and even roots very well. The fiberglass shaft facilitates easy, long-lasting use while providing the durability needed by serious users.
Digging a hole in the rock-filled soil in the woods behind the house was smooth and quick. The blade has plenty of power and sharpness for cutting roots or removing rocks.

This is not a very good shovel. The first drawback is the weight. While not the heaviest shovel we’ve tested, it is significantly heavier than others, especially when moving dirt from my house to my wheelchair.

Another drawback is prioritization. This shovel does not have a standard cylindrical shaft. Instead, it’s a rounded triangle that can be tricky to hold. This is especially noticeable when picking up dirt, but wasn’t a problem when digging.

However, if price is no object and you can handle the weight, you’ll love digging with these garden shovels.
Sometimes all you need is a shovel to dig a hole and move dirt, and you want nothing else. Bully Tools supplied this with a 14 gauge round shovel. The straight fiberglass shaft is strong enough to climb roots and rocks in the hole. It takes a long time to move dirt from here to there.

The blade is powerful enough to cut through sod and hard-packed dirt without much effort. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the performance of this shovel, but there is also nothing special about it.
The only downside I find is that the steps on the blade are a bit more than the others, so it’s a bit unstable to stand on.
Unfortunately, this bare-bones performance isn’t reflected in the price. Bully Tools are among the most expensive tools we’ve tested, and both the manufacturing and construction don’t seem to warrant the high price.
This is another mid-level shovel. It performed well in all our tests, with no major flaws and nothing that stood out. Digging was easy and smooth and I was able to move the dirt from the dirt to the wheelbarrow.
