A snow shovel is a great winter tool, but a garden shovel is a useful, all-purpose lawn tool that can be used for gardening, mulching or fencing. While in essence, shovels are quite similar, there are different shovels that specialize in different jobs. We’ve tested garden shovels, digging holes and moving dirt to find out which shovel is right for you.

Burgon & Ball

After weeks of testing, the Hooyman Digging Shovel ($37.90 at Amazon) was found to be the best gardening tool. What sets it apart from the rest? It is lightweight, strong and offers comfortable hand stability and a fiber shaft. For something more affordable, the Fiskars Long Handle Steel Digging Shovel (at Amazon) offers sturdy steel construction. However, there are plenty of shovels to buy on our list.

The best garden shovel is the Hoyman Digging Shovel. This bad boy is at the end of the shaft and closer to the blade that you carry with your other hand. This provides an extra level of comfort, especially when not wearing work gloves, and keeps your hands safe even when working in wet conditions.

In addition, the blade itself is slightly serrated, so it cuts through hard dirt, sod and even roots very well. The fiberglass shaft facilitates easy, long-lasting use while providing the durability needed by serious users.

Digging a hole in the rock-filled soil in the woods behind the house was smooth and quick. The blade has plenty of power and sharpness for cutting roots or removing rocks.

Impossible To Kill Outdoor Plants

Moving dirt from the dirt pile to the cart was easy on our backs and arms, thanks to its light weight and second-hand grip, which is long enough to allow multiple hand positions.

For garden spades that provide the most bang for your buck, we think the Fiskars Long Handle Steel Digging Spade offers the best value. The durable design is made of steel, and the shaft is welded directly to the blade (not inserted into a tube connected to the blade like most garden shovels). It’s hard to imagine what could break this shovel.

Another benefit is a rest for the legs. Instead of having fins on the outside of the blade like other shovels, this leg goes from the edge of the blade to the shaft, so there is no difference. This gives you a more secure foot grip and allows you to get a bit more range.

This is not a very good shovel. The first drawback is the weight. While not the heaviest shovel we’ve tested, it is significantly heavier than others, especially when moving dirt from my house to my wheelchair.

Another drawback is prioritization. This shovel does not have a standard cylindrical shaft. Instead, it’s a rounded triangle that can be tricky to hold. This is especially noticeable when picking up dirt, but wasn’t a problem when digging.

The Black & Decker Mini D Handle Spade is the perfect garden spade for digging small areas such as raised garden beds.

The Black & Decker Mini D Handle Spade is a small garden spade designed specifically for digging holes in gardens for planting such as garden beds. He is very good at it. We used it to plant tomatoes in our garden and it was the perfect tool for the job.

However, in our standard spade test, these small garden spades are not as versatile tools as larger spades. Although it can dig through harder soil than a cultivated garden, it is difficult and destructive to do so because of the short handle. It also won’t be really good for moving significant dirt.

This shovel is supposed to dig a hole in your knee and then push the dirt into the same hole.

If you are looking for a light and strong garden shovel to help you with small planting tasks, this is a great option. If you’re looking for something other than a shovel, consider our #1 pick.

This shovel is ultra durable as the entire tool is made of steel and the shaft is welded directly to the blade. In our tests, we were able to saw the shovel through any size hole without bending or breaking.

Another great feature of this shovel is the rubber feet. These bolt directly to the blade plate, on both sides, for a comfortable and secure foot rest. You might want to get a second board, just one on each side of it. (We like them a lot.)

Hence, the spade has two major disadvantages. The first is the weight. This shovel is much heavier than any other shovel we’ve tested, and that weight starts to wear on the joints very quickly. This is not a tool I want to use to unload a yard or two of mulch or sand from my trailer.

The second disadvantage is the price. That’s three times the price of other shovels we tested. Stronger and better built than the rest, but definitely three times better. We don’t think so.

However, if price is no object and you can handle the weight, you’ll love digging with these garden shovels.

Sometimes all you need is a shovel to dig a hole and move dirt, and you want nothing else. Bully Tools supplied this with a 14 gauge round shovel. The straight fiberglass shaft is strong enough to climb roots and rocks in the hole. It takes a long time to move dirt from here to there.

The blade is powerful enough to cut through sod and hard-packed dirt without much effort. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the performance of this shovel, but there is also nothing special about it.

The only downside I find is that the steps on the blade are a bit more than the others, so it’s a bit unstable to stand on.

Unfortunately, this bare-bones performance isn’t reflected in the price. Bully Tools are among the most expensive tools we’ve tested, and both the manufacturing and construction don’t seem to warrant the high price.

This is another mid-level shovel. It performed well in all our tests, with no major flaws and nothing that stood out. Digging was easy and smooth and I was able to move the dirt from the dirt to the wheelbarrow.

If you’re looking for a basic shovel that you can use for occasional digging projects around the house, the Master Fiber Handle Digging Shovel offers value for money, straightforward design and performance.

Cobalt’s 40-inch fiberglass shovel is a bit shorter than some of the shovels in our guide. This does have some effect on the amount of leverage you can get into the hole, but it didn’t hurt us much in our testing. Overall, it looks comfortable to use for digging or moving dirt.

This shovel has two disadvantages. The first is the second hand holding position, which I’m usually a big fan of. However, this grip is a bit lower on the shaft than I usually hold, so it’s not a useful feature.

The second problem with this tool is the angle of the bent legs instead of flatness. This means that when you step on them, you only step on the end of the ladder and not the flat, making them a bit more comfortable and stable to use. We also don’t know the longevity of this shovel, as it developed surface rust after several weeks of testing.

The round point razor blade shovel has a wooden handle, which in our experience doesn’t last as long as fiberglass and steel hand tools.
